Volcanoes are openings and associated landforms through which material from within the Earth can reach the surface. The material may include molten rock, fragmented particles, and gases. Not every volcano has the familiar shape of a steep cone. Some form broad, gently sloping structures, while others include craters, domes, or groups of smaller openings spread across a wider volcanic area.

Molten rock beneath the surface is called magma, and material that flows out onto the ground is called lava. Its properties influence how it moves and the landforms it creates. Some lava travels relatively easily, while more viscous material tends to accumulate closer to an opening. Gases and the conditions within a volcanic system also affect the character of an eruption. These factors help explain why volcanic activity can take very different forms.

Volcanic landscapes continue changing after an eruption has ended. Newly exposed material cools and breaks down over time. Rainwater and streams begin to move loose fragments, and vegetation can gradually establish itself where conditions allow. Earlier layers may remain visible in cliffs or cuttings. Looking at these layers can reveal that a landform developed through several separate episodes rather than one single event.

Volcanoes are part of broader geological settings. Many occur near boundaries between large sections of the Earth’s outer shell, though this is not the only setting in which they form. Their distribution provides information about processes operating beneath the surface. An individual volcano is therefore best understood as part of a wider system, not simply as an isolated mountain with an opening at the top.

Observation of volcanic regions combines the study of rocks, landforms, gases, and ground movement. Different measurements describe different parts of a complex process, and visible calm does not by itself explain what is happening below. For a general understanding, the important point is that volcanic activity both changes existing landscapes and creates new material that later becomes part of the continuing cycle of weathering, erosion, and soil development.
